‘Eat, Pray, Love’ of Julia Roberts hit by protests in Bali

Posted by | Indonesia | Wednesday 28 October 2009 11:49 pm

Filming of Hollywood actress Julia Roberts’ new movie ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ was thrown into turmoil after residents in Bali, Indonesia refused to allow the production crew access to the set.

Locals in the village of Bentuyung, where filming was scheduled to take place, objected when the crew arrived a month early. Protesters blocked roads and demanded payment of $32,000 for the use of the location, reports dailyexpress.co.uk.

The protest embarrassed officials who had granted movie bosses permission to film there.

“There was a misunderstanding. The crew came in (with) 20 trucks, earlier than their scheduled shooting on Nov 10, so the villagers were offended and blocked the roads. They asked for 300 million rupiah ($32,100) to use the location for filming. I was very embarrassed and told them this was unacceptable,” said District chief Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati.

Sukawati insists the problem has now been resolved and filming will go ahead as planned.

“Everything is okay now. The villagers understand. Many local and international films have been shot here with no problem at all,” he added.

‘Eat, Pray, Love’: Is a Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem pairing genius, or just plain crazy?

Posted by | Bali News | Wednesday 28 October 2009 11:43 pm

Casting a male lead opposite Julia Roberts is a tricky science. Her whole hey-look-at-me-I’m-a-movie-star persona has been best served in recent years next to subtle, low-key actors like Clive Owen and Aaron Eckhart. Strangely, when she’s up against someone equally as famous (Tom Hanks, or Brad Pitt for example), there’s a painfully noticeable absence of chemistry. With the news that Javier Bardem has signed on to play Roberts’ love interest in Eat, Pray Love (the adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestselling, travelogue-esque memoir), there is reason to be cautiously optimistic: Bardem can handle subtle. He is, after all, one of the best actors in the business.

That said, if you’re thinking a Roberts-Bardem pairing sounds odd and/or like a sign of the apocalypse, don’t fret: I’m right there with you. Picturing the two Oscar winners together is a headscratcher far more puzzling than figuring out the last movie Roberts was in that was a hit. (That’d be Erin Brockovich. The Ocean’s series doesn’t count since she had help from 7.6 other A-listers.) To be sure, Roberts can do romantic comedies in her sleep (she has, actually…it was called America’s Sweethearts) and Bardem terrifically showed his sultry side in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona. It’s the two of them together that’s the problem: The sexy Spaniard with the American motormouth. I just don’t buy it. Then again, Roberts looks nothing like Elizabeth Gilbert, so it seems like a suspension of belief will be required to get within 10 feet of this movie.

Speaking of the movie, with Ryan Murphy of Nip/Tuck and Glee at the helm and Bardem and Richard Jenkins on board for supporting roles, Eat, Pray Love actually does sound quite promising — the questionable casting aside. It is Roberts’ best opportunity yet to win audiences back after her absence and the depressing box office crash-and-burn of her quite-excellent thriller, Duplicity. For those of you who have read Gilbert’s book, what do you think of Bardem’s casting as Felipe: Inspired, or typical Hollywood glam-ification? Do you also share my anxiety at the prospect of seeing Anton Chigurh romance Pretty Woman?

Julia Roberts Set to Eat, Pray, Love

Posted by | Bali News | Wednesday 28 October 2009 11:41 pm

Paramount Pictures recently picked up the rights to Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir Eat, Pray, Love for Pretty Woman Julia Roberts to star. I know Pretty Woman was a long time ago but it meant a lot to me, ok? Besides, who doesn’t love a “hooker with a heart of gold” story? I know I do. And remember that scene when Richard Gere showed her the box with the necklace in it and then closed the lid on her hand so she jumped and then they both laughed? Priceless.

Actually, Eat, Pray, Love has almost nothing to do with Pretty Woman except Julia Roberts so let’s move on, shall we? The big screen version of Eat, Pray, Love will be written and directed by Nip/Tuck creator Ryan Murphy, who is starting to make quite a name for himself taking these types of books to the big screen. His two most recent efforts, Running with Scissors, based on the memoir by Augusten Burroughs and Dirty Tricks, adapted from the book by Martha Mitchell, wife of former Nixon White House Chief of Staff John Mitchell, seem to indicate the writer/director has a soft spot for real-life people in real-life situations.

Too bad Murphy wasn’t around to direct Roberts in Erin Brockovich; that might have been a really interesting film. Although, it’s hard to fault the great job done by Steven Soderberg. Actually, if you think about it, Soderberg seems to like bringing books and real-life characters to the screen just like Murphy does. This is especially apparent when you look at a film like Erin Brockovich and his more recent directing work, the film Guerrilla, which is all about real-life rebel leader Ché Guevara and stars Benecio Del Toro as Ché. Maybe these guys are on to something. Maybe real life is more interesting than I think it is.

Anyway, the story of Eat, Pray, Love is pretty simple and follows the standard arc for fare of this type. It centers around Gilbert, who thought she had the perfect husband, the perfect apartment and the perfect life. Then, as she is trying to get pregnant and fit the final piece into the puzzle that is her “American Dream” she runs into a little problem when she realizes her life isn’t actually quite so perfect after all.

So, she decides to take a serious detour and try to change her life for the better. After a messy divorce she embarks on the proverbial “journey of self-discovery” to see what her life is really supposed to be. Plus, I’m sure there must be some eating, praying and loving along the way too. I hope so or that title doesn’t make any sense at all.

Miss Indonesia visits Padang earthquake victims

Posted by | Indonesia | Wednesday 28 October 2009 11:29 pm

Padang (ANTARA News) - Miss Indonesia 2009 Qory Sandioriva visited earthquake victims in Padang, West Sumatra, on Sunday (Oct 25) under sponsorship of Yayasan Puteri Indonesia and Mustika Ratu.

During her visit, Qory presented relief aid to, and held a dialog with earthquake victims at the Kurao Pagang disaster relief command post in Nanggalo subdistrict, Padang.
The relief aid consisted of cash, tents, and foodstuffs.

Qory who was born in Jakarta, August 17, 1991, said she had come to Padang as she was touched by the fate of the earthquake victims.

“It was a powerful earthquake and many people have become victims,” she said.

She said she was glad she could be in the midst of the earthquake victims and share the grief of the residents of Ranah Minang (Padang) who had lost property and relatives, and hugged the mothers among the victims.

An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter Scale rocked West Sumatra on Wednesday (Sept 30). In the disaster, more than a thousand West Sumatrams died under the rubble of collapsed buildings and the soil of landslides.

Padang city and Padang Pariaman district were the parts of West Sumatra hardest hit by the temblor.

Although relief aid has been flowing in since not long after the eathquake, hundreds of thousands of people still need tents as temporary shelter.

According to Ahmad Gazali, an activist of local NGO Kabisat, West Sumatra residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed still need about 200,000 tents for temporary shelter. (*)

Foreign tourists question `duties’ imposed on souvenirs

Trisha Sertori ,  The Jakarta Post

Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport staff officers have irritated tourists this week by slapping tax duties on souvenirs bought on the holiday island.

In an email currently doing the rounds, an Australian woman shared two cases when baggage checkers demanded customs excises on goods bought in Bali.

“Yesterday my friends visiting from Singapore were really hassled in the Denpasar airport.

“The baggage checkers kept telling them and me that we had to pay tax and customs on all items we had purchased in Bali,” wrote the Australian woman, who has requested anonymity.

“I knew better, and had my receipts, pointing out that tax had already been paid. The poor guy behind me handed over a hundred dollars and suddenly no more tax was needed.”

She said this was the second serious harassment she was aware of.

Another friend who also faced attempted extortion at the Ngurah Rai Airport is an Australian journalist, wrote the woman.

“Don’t people come here to shop? If there are additional fees at the airport it will affect the mom and pop businesses,” she wrote.

Ngurah Rai Airport staffers have a long and ugly history of attempting to extort illegal fees in the name of taxes or fines from visitors.

In 2007 an Australian woman, Dorothy Longhurst, arrived in Bali from Australia to recuperate after battling cancer.

Her passport was two weeks short of the required six months until expiry.

According to reports of the time, an airport official demanded US$4,000 to allow the woman to holiday in Bali.

She and her husband refused and were put on the next plane back to Australia.

The then former vice president, Jusuf Kalla reportedly ordered the Justice and Human Rights Ministry to sack the official in question.

At the time Bali Tourism Board chairman Cokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati agreed that the board often received complaints of attempted extortion at the airport.

Qory Sandioriva: The new Putri Indonesia

Posted by | Bali News | Wednesday 21 October 2009 10:17 pm

qoryThe Jakarta Post - The criticism she has received for “misrepresenting” her home province of Aceh has failed to discourage newly crowned Putri Indonesia 2009 Qory Sandioriva.

Qory, the first woman representing the strongly Islamic region of Aceh to win the title, made no apology for publicly rejecting the jilbab or Muslim headscarf during the pageant’s final night in Jakarta, playing it down as a “misunderstanding”.

“Perhaps it was a mistake to make such a statement, but honestly I have never worn a jilbab all my life,” the 18-year-old French literature student from the University of Indonesia told Waspada Online during a visit to Medan, North Sumatra, a few days after her win.

Her responses to the judges’ questions have upset many people, particularly religious leaders in her home province.

In the contest’s final stage, she was asked why she was not wearing a headscarf like previous contestants from Aceh.

Responding to the question, she argued that hair represented beauty, and thus should not be covered. Moreover, she said the Aceh governor had personally approved of her appearing without a headscarf.

Aceh is the country’s only province governed under Islamic sharia law, and in September the local legislature endorsed a set of strict Islamic codes, or qanun, including a controversial ruling allowing
the caning and stoning to death of adulterers.

Qory insisted she was inspired by Acehnese heroine Cut Nyak Dien, a prominent figure in the resistance movement against Dutch colonial rule back in the 19th century. Aceh was the last territory in the archipelago to fall under Dutch rule.

“[Cut Nyak Dien] never wore a jilbab, but she defended Aceh and Islamic values,” said Qory, a former Jakarta champion of pencak silat, Indonesia’s traditional martial art.

She also played down arguments that not wearing a headscarf made her less Islamic.

“I know Islam is a tolerant religion,” Qory said.

During the final night of the pageant, she was posed with another tricky question: Was the caning and stoning law consistent with human rights and national laws?

This time around, Qory managed to skirt another minefield.

“The qanun should be accepted if that is the wish of the people,” she said.

She won the hearts of the judges with her answers, but more things lay in wait for her off the stage.

“Sandioriva challenged the qanun, therefore she could not have carried the title of Miss Aceh,” Tengku Faisal Aly, secretary of the religious group Aceh Dayah Ulema (HUDA), said as quoted by Waspada Online.

“We were very disappointed with her appearance.”

More controversy stemmed from the fact that Qory was neither born in Aceh nor a resident of the province. She lives in Bekasi, just outside Jakarta.

Qory, however, claimed that her mother came from the Gayo region in Aceh. Besides, she’s not without any supporters from Aceh.

In backing up Qory, anthropologist Teuku Kemal Fasya from Malikus Shalih University in Lhokseumawe told Waspada that the clerics had overreacted.

“This is a beauty pageant,” he said. “She didn’t make any statement against the qanun.”

On her decision not to wear a headscarf, Teuku said it was a personal choice and did not matter whether this represented Aceh women or not.

The controversy might not matter much anymore since Qory is now Putri Indonesia, a title that perhaps befits her birthday on Aug. 17, the same as Indonesia’s Independence Day.

“I know I’ve set off a controversy, but I’m really proud to be the first Acehnese contestant to win Putri Indonesia,” she said.
